Description
Despite his employment contract, Jal Vorn is one of the exiles to a unique planet with unknown long term heath risks.
When he arrives on Blue Star World, his supervisor, Nartar Convre, tries to demote Jal Vorn from skilled computer programmer, to low paid clerk.
Jal refuses and is fired, on the spot, again despite his employment contract.
Jal manages to find employment with the Firver, aliens who run Blue Star World.
Nartar Convre then finds a loophole in Firver law that will allow him to subject Jal to a sequence of death duels, against larger, stronger foes.
Jal is forced to fight. However, Jal was a national champion fencer. Under Firver law, that makes Jal equivalent to a Fiver Noble.
At the first of the death duels, Jal is faced with an opponent who's hugely strong and nearly twice his size.
The Firver then announce, “Mr. Arvan Glencie, Lord Jal Vorn has accepted your challenge and he will fight you with the traditional Noble weapons of sword and dagger, as is his right.”
Despite protests by Nartar Convre and Arvan Glencie, the duel proceeds as scheduled.
Jal wins the duel and then finds that he feels a marked boost in his being and a great hunger, as a result.
After a few duels, Jal is ordered to report to on Kyra, for counseling. Jal doesn't need counseling, he wants Kyra. However, Jal is too short for Kyra, but a measurement reveals that Jal is growing.
Jal and Kyra then conduct a sort of distant relationship, with Kyra not too interested in a man as short as Jal and a man who risks his life on a regular basis.
Kyra, however, begins to see the changes in Jal.
The war that the Firver are fighting isn't going well. Jal is helping the Firver effort, but he can only do so much.
It then becomes likely that the Firver will have to abandon Blue Star World.
In order to have a chance to leave, if the Firver leave, Kyra moves in with Jal.
Then the Firver's enemy moves in a giant battlewagon and it appears that the inhabitants of Blue Star World will become slaves of the Firver's enemies.
However, Kyra is Jal's lady and he has to figure out a way to prevent the enemy from winning Blue Star World.
With the help of Kyra and some of the Firver ladies, Jal develops a desperate plan that may let them survive as free people.
